My Terrible Cellulite

How to learn to survive it without getting frustrated, the first step is accepting that it will always be a part of us. There’s no woman I know who is completely free of cellulite. It doesn’t discriminate; it affects women from mature ages to very young women.

To understand it better, let’s start by explaining what cellulite is and how it affects us.

Cellulite is a metabolic condition that causes the skin to appear uneven and bumpy, with small irregular depressions commonly known as “orange peel skin.” It typically shows up on the outer thighs or buttocks. It often appears during hormonal changes like puberty or pregnancy.

What causes it?

Cellulite forms due to hormonal overproduction that causes fat cells to malfunction. When these cells can’t drain fluids properly, they become inflamed, enlarge, and stiffen, which interferes with fluid circulation. This leads to the characteristic orange peel texture and firmness in the affected skin area.

Factors that can cause this hormonal imbalance include:

  • Natural hormonal changes in women, such as puberty or pregnancy
  • Taking artificial hormones like estrogens
  • Leading a sedentary lifestyle
  • A diet high in sodium
  • Wearing very tight clothing

How is cellulite classified?

  • Grade 1: No visible orange peel skin
  • Grade 2: Orange peel skin appears when the skin is compressed
  • Grade 3: Orange peel skin appears while standing
  • Grade 4: Orange peel skin is permanent

Cellulite can also be categorized by skin texture:

  • Hard skin: The affected skin feels firmer than surrounding areas. Common in active women with grade 2 cellulite.
  • Flaccid skin: The skin is softer and less toned. Typical in sedentary women or those who have lost weight rapidly.
  • Edematous skin: A severe and rare form that causes swelling and pain.
  • Mixed: A combination of the above types, which is the most common.

How can it be prevented?

Cellulite is preventable by changing certain lifestyle habits. Some recommended actions include:

  • Following a diet rich in potassium, vitamin C, and vitamin E
  • Avoiding high sodium foods
  • Avoiding alcohol and caffeine
  • Not smoking
  • Drinking plenty of water
  • Exercising regularly
